Indonesia – Flores
Ever since their arrival in Flores, Indonesia, in 2009, the Camillians have promoted the celebration of the World Day of the Sick with various initiatives in the diocese of Maumere.
This year, as well, the celebration attracted and stimulated the interest of the leading figures of local health-care and they very willingly worked with our missionaries in organising activities for sick people.
During the days prior to the twenty-fifth World Day of the Sick, various initiatives were organised. Amongst these, reference should be made to that of a group of medical doctors and nurses who together with our seminarians organised seminars on health-care education for students of various schools.
In addition, a ‘medical mission’ in a distant mountain village took place on 4-5 February and this involved six medical doctors, fifteen nurses and our thirty-five seminarians. Over 600 sick people benefited from this, amongst whom some patients with HIV and a large number of expectant women with serious health problems related to their condition. Our seminarians made their contribution by visiting sick and elderly people in their homes and teaching catechism to children on the subjects of hygiene and good health.
At the end of these two days in the village of Wolofeo, the Holy Mass on Sunday for the sick was lively and moving. This was the first time this Mass had been held in the village and it was animated by a choir made up of medical doctors, nurses and our seminarians.
Very much awaited – and witnessing a high level of participation – was the diocesan celebration for the sick held on Sunday 12 February in the outlying parish of the city, Bolawolong. The Holy Mass was presided over by the Vicar General of the diocese, Msgr. Ewaldus Sedu, and over a hundred sick people took part, with medical doctors, nurses and a large number of other people.
The presence of the Camillians is certainly leading to greater attention being paid in the diocese to pastoral care for the sick and the world of health care. For this, we are grateful to the Lord and the protector of the sick, St. Camillus.

The Delegation in Madagascar
– On Saturday 4 February 2017: animator Father Albert Rainiherinoro (M.I), chaplain of the diocesan commission for health, for sick people and diversely abled people.
– On Sunday 5 February 2017: animator Father Garvey Zafindrainimara (S.J), chaplain of the Fraternity of the Sick and the Diversely Abled, for health-care workers.
On 11 February 2017, at 9.000, both groups together with other pilgrims met in the square of the Church of Santa Teresina d’Ilena to begin the via crucis to the Tower of Our Lady Salus Infirmorum where a Holy Mass was celebrated. During the Mass the anointing of the sick took place.
This Holy Mass, which was well animated by the young people of the church, led one of those present to say: “If I had not come, a grace would have been absent in my life. My body is tired but my soul is happy”.

Priests, men and women religious, faithful and guests of our house of welcome, with their family relatives, took part in the celebration of Holy Mass which was presided over by the Provincial Superior Fr. Paul Cherdchai Lertjitlekha and during which elderly people and sick people received the sacrament of anointing of the sick.
This religious celebration was followed by fraternal agape offered by the faithful of the surrounding area, in particular of the St. Peter’s Parish of Sampran. Some people also came from Bangkok to make their own contribution.
Our ten Camillian communities were all represented by the religious, the personnel and the guests of the various institutions of the area.
